BILLINGS, Mont. (Nov. 3) –
Bishop Tosi helped spur an Alaska Anchorage comeback with 11 points, including a tying layup with 11 seconds left, but University of Mary guard Jeremiah Jones sank a free throw in the final seconds Sunday to lift the Marauders to a 73-72 victory in both teams' finale at the D2CCAA Tip-Off Classic at Alterowitz Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (2-3) got game highs of 15 points and six assists from senior guard
Sean Evans, while junior guard
Tyler Burraston notched 13 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and no turnovers in the loss.
The Marauders (1-2) were led by 13 points apiece from Ty Rogers and Kevin McGaskey, while Jones finished with eight points and 10 rebounds, including the offensive board that led to the winning free throw.
"We played better in many areas tonight, but we are still making too many mental mistakes that we have in our control, and free throw shooting hurt us in the second half when we had a chance to extend our lead," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "
Tyler Burraston had an outstanding game and showed that he is more than just a three-point shooter."
Despite trailing for most of the first half, the Seawolves drew even at 38-38 on an Evans trey one minute into the second stanza, and took the lead 44-43 on a midrange jumper by Burraston at the 16:37 mark.
Jesse Stines fed Evans for a fastbreak layup to give UAA its largest advantage at 53-48, but the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference club answered with an 11-1 run.
UAA still trailed by 72-67 with under 30 seconds to play when
Zach Ibbetson grabbed an offensive board, dashed outside the three-point arc and delivered a swish. After Mary forward Tamarrein Henderson missed the front end of a one-and-one, Burraston grabbed the board and fed to Evans, who hit Tosi with a three-quarter-court dime for a twisting layin.
The Marauders did not use one of their remaining timeouts, though, and Jones capitalized on some chaos following McGaskey's miss, corralling the ball just inside the three-point arc and getting fouled. He made the first and missed the second attempt, which was knocked out of bounds to UAA with 1.2 seconds showing. Evans caught a deflection off the long inbounds pass, but his 40-foot heave bounced off glass.
Tosi shot 5 of 5 from the field, while fellow senior
Dillon Barrientos finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Ibbetson had nine points and two blocks, and Stines had six points, seven rebounds and no turnovers in a team-high 34 minutes.
UAA continues its non-conference slate this week with games against Hawaii Pacific (Fri., 8 pm AST) and Chaminade (Sat., 6 pm AST) in Honolulu. Find links to live video and stats at GoSeawolves.com.
