HONOLULU (Dec. 19) – Senior center
Tori Hollingshead delivered career highs of 22 points and 14 rebounds, but the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team suffered its worst shooting performance of the season Thursday, falling 54-51 to Hawaii Pacific in the Hoops In Hawaii Classic at the Shark Tank.
Coming in with an NCAA Div. II-best 90.0 points per game, the Seawolves (10-2) could never get going offensively, shooting 18 of 75 (.240) from the floor, 1 of 7 from long range and 14 of 21 on free throws.
The Sharks (4-3) were led by 13 points from guard Morgan Hawkins as they snapped UAA's six-game winning streak and earned their program's first victory over the Seawolves in 14 tries.
"We didn't execute offensively, couldn't take advantage of our opportunities to expand the lead when we got one, and didn't win the 50/50 balls like we are accustomed to," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy. "We will need to put this performance behind us and refocus quickly for an extremely tough upcoming schedule."
The Seawolves erased an early 10-2 hole, and the game would stay within two possessions for the final 35 minutes.
UAA went up 38-35 when Hollingshead and
Jazzpher Evans scored back-to-back baskets late in the third quarter, but the Seawolves could not sustain momentum.
Elaina Mack answered a Sharks run with a three-pointer and Evans scored to earn a 46-46 tie midway through the fourth quarter, before the teams traded more scores. Tied 50-50 and with a chance to take the lead, the game turned when UAA was called for a foul on a loose-ball situation under HPU's basket, leading to a pair of go-ahead free throws for the Sharks.
After each team got defensive stops, Evans missed the second of two free throws with 29 seconds remaining to trail 52-51, forcing the Seawolves to foul. Hawkins made both free throws, and UAA could not convert on three-point attempts by Mack and Evans in the final seconds.
Evans finished with seven points, and while starting forward
Ashlyn Rean collected four points, five rebounds and four steals.
The Seawolves conclude their Hawaii trip Friday at 4:30 p.m. AST with a neutral-court meeting against Daemen (8-3) at the Shark Tank.
