ANCHORAGE (Dec. 5) – Alaska Anchorage junior guard
Tyler Burraston scored 22 points and junior forward
Bishop Tosi posted a double-double, but visiting Saint Martin's used a late surge Thursday to earn a 79-74 men's basketball victory in both teams' Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (5-7, 0-1 GNAC) got 11 points and 11 rebounds from Tosi, while junior guard
Hasaan Herrington and senior guard
Sean Evans chipped in 13 points apiece.
The Saints (10-2, 1-0) were led by 16 points from guard Myles Samuels, plus 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists from forward Diego Trejo-Delgado as they rode hot second-half three-point shooting (7 of 15) and outrebounded the hosts 37-32.
After earning a rare three-game sweep of the Saints last season by a combined nine points, the Seawolves found themselves in another back-and-forth battle. Despite trailing by 23-14 midway through the first half, UAA got three quick three-pointers from Burraston and a late trey from Herrington to go into the locker room tied 40-40.
The second half featured 10 lead changes before the 14:40 mark, before the Saints wrested control with an 8-0 run.
John McFadden made two free throws and Tosi scored on a dish from Evans with five minutes remaining to make it 70-69, and Evans kept it a one-point affair with a short jumper at the 2:22 mark. SMU responded with another timely three-pointer on the ensuing possession, however, and Saints point guard Jaden Nielsen-Skinner found Dyson Lighthall for the clinching basket with 25 seconds left to account for the final score.
A transfer from Green River (Wash.) College, Burraston shot 5 of 9 from three-point range and 3 of 3 at the foul stripe to account for his UAA season-high 22 points, along with six rebounds.
Tosi shot 5 of 7 from the field and dished a career-high six assists without a turnover. It was the second double-double this season and third career for the former Bartlett High School star.
Herrington shot 5 of 9 from the field to record his second-highest scoring game a Seawolf, while McFadden had four points, five rebounds, four assists and no turnovers.
UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. to face Western Oregon (2-8, 0-1). The first fans through the doors will get free hot/cold packs courtesy of Providence Alaska. Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
