MONMOUTH, Ore. (Feb. 24) – Junior point guard
Dillon Barrientos led four double-figure scorers with 17 points and senior forward
Sawyer Storms delivered nine points, 10 rebounds and five assists Saturday to power the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to a 72-51 victory over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building.
The Seawolves (19-8, 9-7 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 16 points from
Tyson Gilbert and 13 points and six rebounds from fellow senior guard
Dathan Satchell to win their fourth in row and reach the brink of a GNAC Tournament berth.
The Wolves (5-19, 2-14) were led by 17 points and 13 rebounds from forward Cameron Benzel, along with 15 points and eight assists from guard Jason Gallant in their home finale.
"We played with poise and purpose today, and our guys never let them up for air defensively, forcing some tough shots and live-ball turnovers that we turned into buckets," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team earned a 21-9 edge in points off turnovers. "Our guys have shown impressive resilience during this win streak, and we're excited to get back home and start preparing for two very good teams next week."
After winning their last three games by a combined five points, the Seawolves never trailed against the Wolves, jumping to a 13-4 lead in the first five minutes.
Nursing a 27-24 edge, UAA took control with a 10-2 run to end the opening half, capped when Barrientos dished one of its five assists to Gilbert for a top-of-the-arc trey just before the buzzer.
Gilbert swished another three to open the second half as the lead continued to balloon, reaching 50-32 on back-to-back treys from Satchell and Barrientos. The Wolves never got closer than 14 points again, with the Seawolves' largest lead reaching 70-44 when Storms drilled a three at the 5:16 mark.
Barrientos shot 6 of 9 from the floor and 4 of 6 on threes as the Californian helped UAA drain a season-high 14 triples on 33 attempts (.424). Gilbert was 4 of 9, Storms 2 of 3 and Satchell 3 of 8 from distance.
Freshman center
Sloan Lentfer continued his strong interior play as well, notching 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting and four rebounds.
Now tied for fourth place after Saturday's full conference slate, the Seawolves will try to secure a GNAC Tournament berth (top six teams qualify) in their final regular-season games next week at the Alaska Airlines Center. Both contests tip at 7:30 p.m., facing traditional rivals Seattle Pacific (Thur., Feb. 29) and Montana State Billings (Sat., Mar. 2).
