ANCHORAGE (Feb. 3) – Junior point guard
Dillon Barrientos scored 16 points, but it was not enough for the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team on a cold-shooting Saturday night in a 65-49 loss to Alaska Fairbanks.
The Seawolves (15-6, 5-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 points and six rebounds from senior guard
Dathan Satchell as their 19-game homecourt streak over their in-state rivals was snapped. It marked UAF's first series road win since Feb. 22, 2003 – a span of 7,651 days – and its first in nine tries against UAA at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Nanooks (5-13, 3-7) got double-doubles from forward Abdul Mohamed (19 points/10 rebounds) and guard Demarcus Hall-Scriven (14 points/10 rebounds) to power a 51-34 advantage on the boards, including 20 offensive rebounds.
After scratching out a 62-56 overtime win a month ago in Fairbanks, the Seawolves found themselves locked in another low-scoring affair in the rematch. Both teams shot under 28 percent in the opening 20 minutes, and the Nanooks used a late run to forge a 21-17 halftime edge.
UAF's Trey Anderson scored inside for a 34-24 lead with 13:48 remaining, but the Seawolves answered with the next seven points, getting a strip by
Jaron Williams and dish to
Tyson Gilbert during the 55-second spurt.
The Seawolves could not maintain any momentum, however, as Anderson completed a 10-0 Nanook surge that pushed it to a double-digit spread for good.
Williams had eight points, three assists and three steals, while Gilbert finished with seven points, two assists, no turnovers and three steals.
The Seawolves are back on the road next week for games at Northwest Nazarene (Thur., Feb. 8, 5:15 pm AST) and Central Washington (Sat., Feb. 10, 5:15 pm AST). Find live video and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
