UAA blasts SPU, runs streak to 7 games

SEATTLE (Jan. 23) – Junior guard Elaina Mack scored 21 points and senior guard Jazzpher Evans added 19 points and four steals Thursday to lead 24th-ranked Alaska Anchorage to a 90-54 women's basketball blowout of Seattle Pacific at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

The Seawolves (17-2, 8-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a career-high-tying 18 points from freshman forward Ashlyn Rean as they stretched their winning streak to seven games and retained a two-game lead atop the GNAC standings.

The Falcons (6-15, 0-8) were led by 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks from reserve forward Emilia Bishop, but the hosts committed 34 turnovers and attempted 37 fewer shots (83-46) than UAA.

"I thought we were extremely focused and got great production from everyone," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy. "We shot the ball well, made smart decisions and everyone played their role again tonight – a true team effort."

Hunting a seventh win in their last eight trips to SPU, the Seawolves wasted little time taking control, scoring in four seconds off the opening tip on a layup by Jaisa Gamble, and stretching to a 12-0 lead by the 7:47 mark.

Leading 27-16 after the first quarter, UAA turned to its national No. 2-ranked scoring defense to hold SPU to just nine points in the second quarter. Evans capped the half by stealing an inbounds pass with three seconds left and swishing a midrange jumper to make the score 51-25.

Evans shot 7 of 14 from the field and 3 of 4 from long range as the Chicago native moved up to No. 21 on UAA's all-time scoring list with 909 points. She needs 12 more points to crack the top 20, and is also four steals shy of UAA's top 10 in that category.

Mack shot 7 of 13 overall and 4 of 8 on threes, while junior forward Kenzie Sirowich snagged a game-high 11 rebounds. A transfer from Franklin Pierce, Sirowich now has 41 boards over the last five games.

UAA also got its usual stat-stuffing effort from senior point guard Emilia Long, who tallied 14 points (6-11 FG, 2-2 FT), four assists and eight steals. The Cal Poly Humboldt transfer now has eight games with five-plus steals, having entered the week No. 2 in NCAA Div. II with 4.6 per game.

The Seawolves conclude the first half of the 18-game, round-robin GNAC schedule when they face Montana State Billings (No. 20 WBCA Top 25 poll) on Saturday in Billings. Opening tip is set for 2:15 pm AST, with live video and stats links available at GoSeawolves.com.
