HONOLULU (Nov. 14) – Sophomore forward
Mahaila Harrison had 24 points and junior center
Lillee Duffin posted her first double-double to help Alaska Anchorage to a 72-49 women's basketball victory over Hawaii Pacific at The Shark Tank on Friday night.
The Seawolves (3-0) got 11 points and 13 rebounds from Duffin, while freshman guard
Mylee Anderson had 11 points, six rebounds and three assists in the first NCAA Div. II West Region contest of the season.
The Sharks (0-1) were led by 11 points from guard Mia Frye, but were held to .313 shooting and forced into 17 turnovers.
Despite an early 7-2 deficit, the Seawolves rallied with a 12-0 run and led the rest of the way. Sophomore guard
Kimberly Carrada Sanchez gave the Seawolves an early lift with a step-back, buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the first quarter with a 17-12 lead, and Harrison pushed the advantage to 27-14 with four straight free throws midway through the second.
"We called an early timeout, and our team responded well and took control early, which was key," said UAA head coach
Matt Thune. "Our defense kept them from getting into a consistent flow, and we got great contributions up and down the lineup, especially from our freshmen with some big minutes."
The Seawolves led 36-21 at halftime and 51-31 after three quarters before the Sharks made one last rally, slicing their deficit to 14 points twice midway through the fourth quarter.
Harrison answered both times, however, as the VCU transfer made a traditional three-point play and followed with a three-pointer to make it 61-44 with 4:30 remaining.
Harrison shot 3 of 7 from long range and 9 of 15 at the free throw line to open her Seawolf career with three straight 20-plus scoring efforts.
Duffin shot 5 of 9 from the field, along with two assists and no turnovers in 33 minutes, while Anderson shot 5 of 7 and Carrada Sanchez 4 of 7.
Senior guard
Elaina Mack had eight points and six rebounds as the King Cove native tied another Alaskan – Juneau's Tanya Nizich (2000-04) – for fifth place on UAA's career three-pointers list at 177.
The Seawolves are back in action Saturday at 5 p.m. AST when they travel crosstown to face Chaminade (0-1) in the GNAC/PacWest Challenge at McCabe Gymnasium. Find live video (PPV) and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
