ANCHORAGE (Nov. 18) – Junior center
Lillee Duffin hauled in a school-record-tying 24 rebounds and senior
Elaina Mack scored 15 points Tuesday to propel No. 22 Alaska Anchorage to a 59-43 women's basketball victory over Hawaii Hilo at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (5-0) also got 14 points, five rebounds and three assists from freshman guard
Mylee Anderson as they improved to 11-1 all-time against Hilo and 62-5 against Pacific West Conference teams over the past 25 seasons.
The Vulcans (2-1) got a game-high 18 points from guard Brooke Samura, but the visitors were outrebounded 52-34 and shot just 1 of 17 from long range.
"That wasn't pretty, but it was encouraging to see that we are able to win games in different ways, and tonight it was with a terrific defensive effort," said UAA head coach
Matt Thune. "Everyone did a great job on their assignments and communicated well on that side of the court, and Lillee did an absolutely tremendous job of cleaning up the boards."
A transfer from Lane (Ore.) Community College, where she helped her team to 62-3 record over two seasons, Duffin added seven points, two assists, two steals, a block, and drew a game-high six fouls. She also logged a game- and UAA season-high 39 minutes as she tied Tammy Middaugh's Seawolf rebounding record from Dec. 11, 1981 against Puget Sound. The 24 boards also tied the fourth-most by a Great Northwest Athletic Conference player since the league was founded in 2001-02.
After beating Pac West opponents Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade in Honolulu over the weekend, the Seawolves survived a cold-shooting first half to earn a 29-19 edge at the break.
Hilo sliced it to a nine-point game to start the second half, but UAA answered nine seconds later with a short jumper by
Mahaila Harrison (9 points), claiming a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
The visitors stayed within striking distance until freshman guard
Jennifer Nash (5 points) nailed a three-pointer to make it 41-24 late in the third quarter, and
Faith Mersburgh (6 points/3 steals) banked in a three for a 47-27 lead with 7:40 remaining.
Sophomore guard
Kimberly Carrada Sanchez delivered another solid stat line off the bench, going for six assists, seven rebounds, three steals and no turnovers in 25 minutes.
The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Friday and Saturday to face Div. I opponents in the annual ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout. UAA opens Friday at 7:30 pm against St. Thomas, and faces either Bowling Green or UC Irvine in the championship (7:30 pm) or consolation game (5:15 pm) Saturday.
