UAA falls short in Shootout 3rd-place game, 67-63

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 22) – Freshman guard Mylee Anderson scored 19 points and senior Elaina Mack tallied a double-double, but the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team could not fend off a late run by Div. I opponent Bowling Green on Saturday, falling 67-63 in the third-place game of the ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Mack had 15 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and just one turnover as she made the all-tournament team, while sophomore forward Mahaila Harrison added 15 points and seven rebounds. Ranked No. 22 in the NCAA Div. II national poll, the Seawolves counted the game as an exhibition.

The Falcons (2-4) were led by 19 points and four assists from all-tourney pick Paige Kohler, along with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists from guard Johnea Donahue.

"We learned a lot about who we are as a team this weekend and should all be encouraged as we move ahead," said new UAA head coach Matt Thune. "Tonight was tough – we had some uncharacteristic turnovers in the open court and didn't hit our free throws. To me it really came down to those two areas, and we will get it corrected. We appreciate the support of the community coming out and having our back. This first Shootout was a really cool experience to be a part of."

Despite an early 14-6 deficit, the Seawolves roared back to make it 23-20 at the end of the first quarter, and took their first lead at 26-25 on a layup by Faith Mersburgh midway through the second quarter.

Tied 34-34 at halftime, UAA dominated the third quarter and took a 49-38 lead when Mack nailed a pull-up trey with 1:32 on the clock. The visitors from Ohio got a big answer with a three from Lauren Gerken to end the quarter, however, and sliced it to a two-possession game, 57-51, when Kohler completed an and-one layup with 6:32 left in the fourth quarter.

After the Falcons pulled even, Anderson gave UAA a 61-59 lead on driving layup at the 3:41 mark, only to see Kohler answer with a trey. Kohler gave her team the lead for good, 64-62, with two free throws with 58 seconds left, and UAA missed a final chance to tie when Harrison missed a jumper in the lane at the 10-second mark.

Junior center Lillee Duffin had a game-high 12 rebounds for UAA, along with five points and three steals.

UAA returns to its NCAA Div. II schedule with two games next weekend against UC Merced (Friday 5:15 pm and Saturday 3 pm) at the Alaska Airlines Center. Find tickets, live links and more at GoSeawolves.com.
