ANCHORAGE (Nov. 22) – Outside hitters
Lee Ivakina and
Tia Allen both recorded double-doubles Saturday to propel Alaska Anchorage to a 25-17, 25-23, 24-26, 25-15 volleyball victory over Seattle Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center, lifting the Seawolves into a four-way tie for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title.
Ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Div. II West Region, the Seawolves (23-5, 14-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got 15 kills and 11 digs from Ivakina and 13 kills and 17 digs from Allen as they finished the regular season on a six-match win streak.
The Falcons (12-14, 7-11) were led by 16 kills from outside hitter Megan Omlid, finishing tied with Saint Martin's for sixth in the final GNAC standings.
"We went out today and played for our seniors and controlled what we could control," said UAA head coach
Stacie Meisner. "We once again had great efforts from a lot of different players, and our depth continues to keep us strong. I'm excited to see what we can do in the postseason."
The Seawolves dominated the opening set with a 15-2 start, and hung on to take a tight second set behind six kills from Allen and five from Ivakina.
The third frame featured eight ties and four lead changes as UAA threatened to sweep, going ahead 23-21 on a triple block by Allen,
Martina Riba and
Trinity Byrne. SPU would rally, however, capping a 5-1 run with consecutive kills from Amaya Evans to send it to a fourth set.
UAA rebounded to lead throughout the fourth, taking a 9-3 lead on back-to-back kills from Allen and Byrne. SPU rallied within 11-10 before
Emma Beck kickstarted a clinching 7-0 run with consecutive kills, and Allen appropriately slammed the match-point kill on senior day.
Beck finished with 12 kills on .312 hitting, while Ivakina hit .353. Byrne notched six kills on career-best .385 hitting and three block assists, and senior libero
Madison Galloway led the way with 15 digs.
Freshman setter
Johana Malikova had 30 assists, and sophomore setter
Hannah Trotter provided a late boost with 10 assists, two kills on two attacks, five digs and two aces.
Riba led the Seawolves with four block assists.
Thanks to Simon Fraser's 3-2 win over Central Washington later Saturday, the GNAC finished in an unprecedented four-way tie for first place between those teams, UAA and Alaska Fairbanks, with UAF claiming the NCAA Tournament automatic qualifying bid.
The Seawolves are all but assured of earning one of the five at-large bids to the NCAA Div. II West Region Championships, with the announcement coming Monday at 3:30 pm at ncaa.com. That tournament will be held Dec. 4-6, presumably hosted by the No. 1 seed.
