ANCHORAGE (Nov. 29) – The Alaska Anchorage trio of
Mahaila Harrison,
Elaina Mack and
Kimberly Carrada Sanchez combined for 76 points and the 17th-ranked Seawolves used a third-quarter blitz to pull away Saturday for a 100-58 women's basketball victory over UC Merced at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (7-0) got 28 points, seven rebounds and four steals from Harrison, along with 25 points and 11 rebounds from Mack, who reached the 25-point mark for the third time this season. Carrada Sanchez finished with career highs of 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting (3-4 3FG) and 10 assists – plus three steals and just one turnover – helping UAA tie for the second-fewest turnovers in program history with five.
The Bobcats (3-3) were led by 23 points and 17 rebounds from starting forward Nicole Lukito, but the California Collegiate Athletic Association club committed 22 turnovers and was outshot .459 to .303.
"I'm proud of the effort we gave on both ends of the court for 40 minutes," said UAA head coach
Matt Thune. "That was given as a challenge, and everyone on our team responded with solid contributions. Kimberly had a great night off the bench, and the way we shared the ball the past two games was impressive."
Looking to sweep the visitors after an 93-80 decision Friday, UAA again led from wire to wire, sparked by threes from Mack and Harrison on the first two possessions. The Bobcats sliced it to a one-possession game three times in the late stages of the first quarter, but the Seawolves responded to take a 41-31 lead into the locker room.
UAA took complete control after the break as
Mylee Anderson and
Faith Mersburgh scored back-to-back buckets, and freshman
Brooke Leo pushed it to a 55-33 advantage with a top-of-the-arc three midway through the quarter.
Harrison shot 11 of 27 from the field (4-11 3FG) to earn her collegiate scoring high, adding three assists. Mack was 11 of 21 from the field, plus three assists, a career-high four blocks and no turnovers in 33 minutes.
Junior center
Lillee Duffin chipped in six points (3-4 FG), nine rebounds and four assists, Mersburgh had six points and five rebounds, and Leo had a career-high seven points (2-2 3FG).
UAA opens Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next week with contests at Saint Martin's (Thur., Dec. 4, 4:15 pm AST) and Western Oregon (Sat., Dec. 6, 1 pm AST). Find live video ($) and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
