ANCHORAGE (Nov. 6) – Senior outside hitter
Tia Allen ripped 11 of her 18 kills in the final two sets and sophomore setter
Hannah Trotter delivered an impressive performance off the bench Thursday to propel Alaska Anchorage to a 19-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-13 volleyball victory over No. 8 Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (18-5, 9-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a combined 20 kills on plus-.400 hitting from the front-row duo of
Bella Burney and
Emma Beck as they improved to 3-0 against nationally top-10 ranked teams and swept the season series from the Canadians.
The Red Leafs (17-3, 11-3) got 20 kills and five block assists from pin hitter Natalie Lemoine-Sells, but were outhit .239 to .178 and outblocked 11-8, seeing their five-match win streak halted.
"We were not executing in the first two sets and Simon took advantage of the opportunities we gave them," said UAA head coach
Stacie Meisner. "This is an extremely tough group though, and after we started to get some momentum in the third set, we didn't let our foot off the gas. It was another great team win obviously, but special credit to Hannah and
Eleasha (Sapon) for giving us a huge spark and making some incredible plays down the stretch."
Featuring two teams tabbed in Wednesday's initial NCAA Div. II West Region top-10 rankings, the match started off lopsided in favor of the visitors from British Columbia. SFU held UAA to .156 hitting over the first two sets and used a strong service game to grab its 2-0 advantage. Red Leafs sophomore Megan Hawkins served six of her nine aces in that early stretch, finishing tied for the second-most aces in the 25-year history of the GNAC.
Despite trailing 5-3 in the third, UAA finally got rolling behind two straight kills from Burney (8 kills, .467, 5 block assists) to spark a 7-1 run. Sapon served an ace to make it 17-11 as the Seawolves cruised from there.
Set four featured seven ties and two lead changes in the early stages, before UAA took control again. Nursing a 15-14 lead,
Lee Ivakina slammed one of her 13 kills, and Allen converted a couple points later for an 18-15 edge. SFU used its final timeout down 20-15, but could not get any closer.
UAA's defense came to the forefront in the fifth set, forging a 6-1 lead behind a pair of block assists by Allen. Allen slammed kills to go ahead 13-8 and 14-10 before the Red Leafs made one last run, repelling three match points in a row. But after committing her lone attack error of the night to allow SFU within 14-13, Burney responded by going high alongside Trotter to stuff an attack by Davida Hill for the clincher.
Allen finished with 11 digs, three block assists and two assists, hitting .294 and recording her 13th double-double.
Beck had 12 kills on .400 hitting, and sophomore middle blocker
Martina Riba notched five total blocks and a career-high three assists.
Senior libero
Madison Galloway was also at her best in the late going, notching 18 digs to move into fifth place on UAA's career list (1,330).
A freshman defensive specialist from Dimond High, Sapon had six digs, one assist, one ace and no errors of any kind in her three sets played.
The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. to face 14th-ranked and league-leading Western Washington (18-3, 12-2). Find tickets, live links and more at GoSeawolves.com.
