ANCHORAGE (Nov. 8) – Senior
Akok Machar scored 19 points and sophomore
Lyman Simmons tallied 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench Saturday to help Alaska Anchorage to an 80-48 men's basketball victory over Evergreen State at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (2-2) also got 11 points and five assists from junior guard
Cole Johnson as they outshot the visitors .558 to .341 and outrebounded them 37-20.
The Geoducks – who counted the game as an exhibition – were led by 14 points from starting forward Tony Frohlich-Fair.
"I think we made some nice improvements from yesterday (an 85-58 win over Evergreen), especially defensively as the game wore on," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "It was also nice to get some quality minutes for some of our bench players, which instills confidence in our depth."
Despite trailing 13-12 after nine minutes, the Seawolves took control with a 13-3 run, capped by six straight points from Simmons. Machar drained a three-pointer right before the break to make it 43-22, and the Geoducks could not cut into their deficit in the second half.
Machar shot 6 of 9 from the floor and 5 of 6 from long distance, scoring double figures for the fourth time in four games. The Texas-Tyler transfer added six rebounds and a pair of assists.
Coming off a redshirt season, Simmons recorded career highs in scoring and rebounds, hitting 5 of 7 shots from the field and 2 of 3 at the foul stripe.
