Seawolves stuff Orediggers in Honolulu, 76-55

HONOLULU (Dec. 18) – Sophomore forward Mahaila Harrison scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Thursday to help power the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 76-55 victory over Colorado Mines in the Hoops In Hawaii Classic at the Shark Tank.

The Seawolves (8-2) also got 11 points and a game-high seven assists from freshman guard Mylee Anderson as they forced 27 turnovers and outscored the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference club 48-26 in the paint.

The Orediggers (4-8) were led by 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from guard Emma Sixta, but the rest of her teammates shot just 15 of 49 (.306) from the field.

"Mahaila was feeling it offensively, whether it was her teammates setting her up with nice plays or creating for herself on the offensive glass," said UAA head coach Matt Thune. "But the real difference in making this a 20-point win was our commitment on the defensive end, plus our execution in turning some of those stops into big buckets at the other end."

Tied 8-8 after five minutes, the Seawolves got consecutive baskets from senior guard Elaina Mack and a three-pointer from Harrison to surge ahead for good. UAA held Mines without a field goal for the rest of the quarter to claim a 17-9 lead, and slowly stretched to a 29-11 advantage after two straight baskets by Harrison.

The Seawolves made it 33-17 at halftime when Honolulu native Faith Mersburgh snagged a backcourt steal and scored as the clock hit zeroes.

Colorado Mines could get no closer than 47-33 midway through the third quarter, before Harrison provided another late dagger with a last-second trey to make it 56-32.

Harrison shot 14 of 20 from the field and 3 of 6 from long range as the Vancouver, Wash., native claimed her second double-double and her first against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent. She also had two assists, three steals and a block in a team-high 33 minutes.

Mersburgh had 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting and a career-high four steals, while Mack finished with nine points and four rebounds.

The Seawolves also got clutch efforts off the bench from sophomore guard Kimberly Carrada Sanchez (6 pts, 4 rebs, 4 assts, 4 stls) and freshman forward Alba Sanz (career-high 7 pts, 3-4 FG, 4 rebs) as they shot 56 percent from two-point range.

UAA finishes the non-conference slate Saturday at 5:45 pm AST when it plays No. 23 Ferris State (7-3) on the same court. Find live video ($) and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
