MONMOUTH, Ore. (Dec. 6) – Junior forward
Sylas Williams had 18 points and 11 rebounds, propelling a game-ending surge for Alaska Anchorage in a 64-58 men's basketball victory over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building on Saturday.
The Seawolves (8-4, 1-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 points, five assists and four steals from senior wing
Hasaan Herrington as they closed on a 13-3 run over the final five minutes. Senior guard
Akok Machar and junior guard
Cole Johnson added 11 points apiece, along with seven points and eight rebounds from senior forward
Bishop Tosi.
The Wolves (3-5, 0-2) were led by 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from guard Jadin Penigar, but the hosts were outrebounded 34-24 and outscored 44-24 in the paint.
"We fought through a lot of adversity over the weekend and stayed poised and connected through the storm," said UAA assistant
Ashton Pomrehn, who led the team in head coach
Rusty Osborne's absence to attend to a family medical issue. "I'm proud of our guys' mental toughness and ability to execute on the fly when Western Oregon made good adjustments in their zone defense, and it ended up being the difference in getting the win."
Looking to bounce back from Thursday's GNAC-opening loss at Saint Martin's, the Seawolves blitzed the Wolves 19-6 over the first 10 minutes, getting multiple buckets from Williams and Johnson. The Wolves responded with a 12-0 run, however, and managed a 31-29 lead when reserve guard Braydon Olson nailed a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer.
Peingar scored to open the second half, but Machar swished a corner trey 15 seconds later, setting up a second half played almost entirely within one possession.
The game featured six ties and 13 lead changes in total, with the Wolves earning a 53-51 advantage at the 5-minute mark. UAA took over from there, going ahead on a feed from Herrington to Tosi for a layup and three-point play. Williams dished to Tosi for a dunk to make it 56-53, then answered a WOU tip-in with a hook shot and a putback to push the lead to 60-55.
WOU would not score from the field over the final three minutes as UAA pulled away with two free throws and a breakaway dunk by Machar, along with three critical defensive rebounds by reserve guard
Zach Ibbetson.
Williams shot 8 of 11 from two-point range and made both of his free throws, securing his second straight double-double and adding three assists. Johnson had three assists, while Herrington and Williams committed just one turnover apiece in 74 combined minutes.
The Seawolves finish their road trip with a trip to Div. I opponent Denver on Thursday at 5 pm AST.
