Wolves bite #16 Seawolves, 77-69

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Dec. 6) – Senior guard Elaina Mack scored 17 points and junior center Lillee Duffin posted another big double-double Saturday, but the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team could not fend off a big third-quarter run by Western Oregon, falling 77-69 at the New P.E. Building.

Duffin had 15 points and 16 rebounds for the nationally 16th-ranked Seawolves (7-2, 0-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference), while freshman guard Mylee Anderson added 16 points.

The Wolves (5-3, 2-0) were led by 21 points apiece from Kylani Rookstool and Triniti Youngblood as they snapped a 20-game home losing streak against UAA.

"We didn't show up today how we need to across the board to be able to play to our potential," said UAA head coach Matt Thune. "We did not play disciplined or within our system on either end."

Coming off their first loss of the season Thursday at Saint Martin's, the Seawolves controlled the first quarter and earned a 20-10 lead on an Anderson layup to open the second.

UAA earned a 31-26 halftime lead when Anderson nailed a three just before the break, but the momentum would not last after the break.

Western Oregon's Ciona Wells scored 10 points in the third quarter as the hosts outshot UAA 69 percent to 23 percent and won 13-8 on the boards. The Wolves led 56-48 with 10 minutes to play, and they managed to keep it a two- to three-possession game the rest of the way.

Duffin shot 5 of 8 from the field and committed just one turnover in a game-high 38 minutes. The Lane (Ore.) Community College transfer secured her fourth double-double as a Seawolf and leads the GNAC with 13.4 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Kimberly Carrada Sanchez had nine points and five rebounds, while junior guard Faith Mersburgh nabbed a career-high eight rebounds.

The Seawolves finish a busy road trip with a Sunday noon AST tip against Div. I Oregon State in Corvallis. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
