BURNABY, British Columbia (Feb. 15) – Freshman forward
Ashlyn Rean scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds to aid another midgame blitz for the nationally ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team Saturday in an 80-63 victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (22-3, 13-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) – ranked No. 20 in the WBCA poll and No. 16 in the D2CSC poll – also got 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists from senior forward
Jaisa Gamble as they moved within one victory of clinching a GNAC Tournament quarterfinal bye.
Senior guard
Emilia Long had 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals, moving past Kiki Robertson (109 steals, 2016-17) for both the UAA and GNAC single-season steals record, now at 111 with four games left in the regular season.
Guard Sophia Wisotzki scored 30 points on 10-of-21 shooting for Simon Fraser (12-12, 5-10) as the nation's third-leading scorer accounted for half of her team's field goals.
"Our team stepped up to the challenge again against a quality opponent on the road," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose squad outrebounded the hosts 53-25. "We were relentless on the boards, and had great energy on both ends of the court, especially from Jaisa, who really got us going in the first half."
Looking to stay at least one game ahead of Montana State Billings for the GNAC lead, the Seawolves fell behind 13-9 after six minutes and 24-20 in the early stages of the second quarter. SFU guard Makenna Gardner swished a three-pointer to put her team ahead 30-28 with 4:10 left in the first half, but that would be the Red Leafs' last field goal for a 10-minute stretch.
Gamble scored inside to knot the score and senior center
Tori Hollingshead put UAA ahead for good with a layup to make it 34-32. Senior guard
Jazzpher Evans added a three-pointer and then swished a stepback 18-footer at the halftime buzzer to earn a 40-32 advantage.
The run grew to 18-2 on baskets from Gamble, Evans and Rean to open the third quarter, but the Red Leafs would not go quietly, slicing their deficit to 50-45 when Wisotzki exploded for nine points in a two-minute span.
Hollingshead responded with three straight points and Gamble benefitted from Long's record-breaking steal, pushing the lead back to double figures on a fast-break layup. Rean capped a game-clinching 14-0 run with four points in the final 40 seconds of the quarter, including a buzzer-beating push shot in the lane to make it 64-45.
Gamble shot 6 of 9 from the field as the San Bruno, Calif., native scored her most points in a GNAC game, along with two steals and a key block of Wisotzki.
Hollingshead earned her third consecutive double-double and seventh of the season with 16 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks, while Evans finished with 12 points and no turnovers in 29 minutes.
Senior guard
Ja'Niah Alexander had seven rebounds and three steals as six of UAA's eight players grabbed at least six boards.
The Seawolves finish their home season next week with a pair of games at the Alaska Airlines Center, starting with a Thursday 5:15 p.m. showdown against nationally ranked and fellow GNAC title contender MSU Billings. Find tickets and more at GoSeawolves.com.
NOTES: Pending tonight's results, the Seawolves now need just one more win or one more Central Washington loss to clinch a GNAC Tournament quarterfinal bye … UAA owns all three of the GNAC's top individual steals seasons, with Long surpassing former Seawolf stars Robertson and Kian McNair (106 steals in 2018-19) … Evans rose to No. 18 on UAA's career scoring list with 982 points … Hollingshead tied for No. 15 on UAA's career list with 10 double-doubles.
