ANCHORAGE (Feb. 22) – Senior center
Tori Hollingshead recorded career highs of 26 points and 15 rebounds Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team clinched no worse than a share of its ninth Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season title with a 99-51 blowout of Seattle Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center.
Ranked No. 19 in the NCAA Div. II top-25 coaches' poll, the Seawolves (24-3, 15-1 GNAC) also got 23 points from senior point guard
Emilia Long, along with 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists, six steals and two blocks from freshman forward
Ashlyn Rean.
The Falcons (8-21, 2-14) were led by 16 points from guard Hunter Bierne, but were outrebounded 55-32, outshot .439 to .288 and forced into 29 turnovers.
"Tonight was another step along the way to meeting our goals for the season," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, who has led UAA to seven GNAC regular-season titles since taking over the program in the 2012-13 campaign. "The hard part is just beginning, though, and we need to stay focused and keep improving as we head into the final weekend and the playoffs."
After leading from the opening tip in last month's 90-54 win in Seattle, UAA took a few minutes to get going in the rematch, falling behind 8-6 in the early going. Long scored to give the Seawolves the lead for good at 12-10, and Rean made a putback layup to cap a 10-0 run three minutes later.
The Seawolves held the visitors scoreless for the first five minutes and without a field goal for the first 6:45 of the second quarter, pulling away for a 49-21 halftime advantage.
Hollingshead finished 10 of 19 from the floor and snagged 10 offensive boards as the Orem, Utah, native claimed her fifth straight double-double and GNAC-best ninth this season.
Meanwhile, Long shot 8 of 16 from the floor and 7 of 7 on free throws, stuffing the stat sheet as well with a season-high eight rebounds, six assists, five steals and a block.
Rean shot 8 of 11 from the field, and senior guard
Jazzpher Evans scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting (2-4 3FG), along with three assists and no turnovers.
Junior guard
Elaina Mack was the fifth Seawolf in double figures with 10 points, while senior guard
Ja'Niah Alexander had four steals and came one shy of a career high with nine boards.
With the victory, UAA needs just one more win or one Montana State Billings loss over the final two games to claim the outright title and the top seed for the GNAC Tournament, Mar. 6-8 in Lacey, Wash.
UAA's title is its first since the 2019-20 season, when the Seawolves went 31-2 before the pandemic-caused cancellation of the NCAA Tournament.
The Seawolves travel along the I-5 corridor for games against Western Oregon (Thur., 4:15 pm AST) and Saint Martin's (Sat., 2 pm) to conclude the regular season. Find live links for both contests at GoSeawolves.com.
