BOZEMAN, MONT. – Carmen Nielssen posted a career-best second-place finish in the slalom at the MSU Invite Tuesday.
"Huge day for Carmen," said head coach Sparky Anderson. "Her first NCAA podium and best career FIS result. Fun to see her progression into the elite ranks of this super talented field."
Sara Rask of Denver won the women's race in 1:45.22 with Nielssen finishing in 1:45.30.
Ella Bromee placed ninth (1:47.59), and Ashleigh Alexander was 14th (1:49.33).
Jan Ronner was the top finisher in the men's race placing 13th (1:44.46).
Dylan Timm finished 23rd (1:45.77), and Hunter Eid was 29th (1:49.63).
"Ella and Ash had solid days as well, battling tough course conditions and showing some grit," said Anderson. "Unfortunately we have a few kids who are beat up from a very rough day in yesterday's GS, so we were shorthanded going into today. Jan had a solid race both yesterday and today. Dylan flipped it today and battled into the points with Hunter who did it the hard way. All in all, our group is showing signs of our dark horse identity, and we're looking forward to getting back down to the University of Utah's new Olympic venue. We had some success there last year. As long as we can rest and heal up we'll compete."
UAA finished fifth out of nine teams.
Filip Wahlqvist of Colorado won the men's race in 1:42.28.
UAA will compete at the RMISA Alpine Qualifier Friday.
World Junior/U23 Championships
Canadian Derek Deuling finished 23rd in the classic sprint.
Constance Lapointe will compete in the 20-kilometer classic race Wednesday.
