LACEY, Wash. (Mar. 1) – Another double-double from
Tori Hollingshead was not enough for the 15th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team Saturday in a 57-53 loss to Saint Martin's in the regular-season finale at Marcus Pavilion.
Hollingshead had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Seawolves (25-4, 16-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference), who shot 2 of 13 from the field and 1 of 8 on free throws in the fourth quarter.
The Saints (16-11, 9-9) were led by 19 points from Jada Travis as they outscored the visitors 20-5 in the fourth, finishing the game on an 11-1 run. Kiana Rios had 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting for SMU, including the go-ahead layup with 40 seconds remaining.
Looking to close the regular season on a nine-game winning streak after clinching the outright GNAC title Thursday, the Seawolves overcome a slow start to grab a 22-19 lead after one quarter. Freshman forward
Ashlyn Rean scored all 12 of her points in the opening half as UAA went into the locker room ahead 35-26.
The Seawolves increased their advantage to 45-32 on back-to-back layups by Hollingshead, but the momentum would stop in the final 10 minutes.
Hollinghead's final basket gave UAA a 52-46 lead with 6:33 left, before the Saints eventually tied it 53-53 on a series of three straight off-balance layups.
Hollingshead missed two free throws with 1:03 remaining, and Rios scored on a driving layup 23 seconds later. The Saints got a defensive stop, but two missed free throws by Kasey Booster gave UAA one final opportunity.
Jazzpher Evans missed a straightway three-pointer with seven seconds left, and the rebound was knocked out of bounds by the Saints. Rean got an open look on the inbounds play, but her shot was short and rebounded by SMU center Sarah Lamet, who sank two free throws with six-tenth of a second remaining.
It was the 10th double-double this season for Hollingshead, who also had two blocks and three steals.
Senior point guard
Emilia Long finished with nine points, four assists and three steals for UAA, which still takes the No. 1 seed into the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament on the same court next week. The Seawolves have a quarterfinal bye, set to face the winner between No. 4 seed Western Washington (17-10, 12-6) and No. 5 seed Northwest Nazarene (16-11, 10-8) on Friday at 4:15 p.m. AST.
