CARSON, Calif. (Mar. 15) – Senior
Tori Hollingshead and junior
Elaina Mack scored 17 points apiece to lead a huge comeback, but 4th-seeded Alaska Anchorage could not overcome a rough shooting night Saturday, falling 63-61 to top-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills in the NCAA Div. II Women's Basketball West Regional Championships semifinals at the Torodome.
The Seawolves (28-5) – ranked No. 16 nationally – also got a career-high-tying 15 rebounds from Hollingshead as they lost despite outboarding the hosts 42-32.
The nationally No. 4-ranked Toros (33-1) were led by a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds from forward Asia Jordan as they advanced to Monday's regional title game against Central Washington.
"We started in a pretty big hole, and that's credit to Dominguez," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team fell behind 32-14 early in the second quarter. "They kind of took us out of what we wanted to do, but when we started settling in – and it was more so making this kind of a half-court game – we were able to control the tempo with our (own) press."
Senior guard
Jazzpher Evans finally got the Seawolves going with a traditional three-point play, and Hollingshead capped a 16-5 run with a putback five minutes later. The Toros recovered to take a 42-32 lead into the locker room, but the Seawolves would continue their momentum in the third quarter.
Sparked by a three-pointer from Mack on the opening possession, UAA opened with a 12-0 run over the first five minutes of the second half, tying it on a short jumper by Mack and going ahead on another bucket by Hollingshead, who recorded her 13th double-double of the season.
The run expanded to 17-2 when Hollingshead completed a three-point play at the 3:14 mark to make it 49-44, but the offensive momentum would not continue.
The Toros answered with the next 11 points over an eight-minute stretch before Hollingshead scored on a feed from
Emilia Long to make it 55-51. It remained a two-possession affair until just eight seconds remained, when Mack sank three free throws to slice it to 61-58.
The Toros broke the Seawolf press with a long pass to Jordan for a clinching layup, however, before Mack nailed her fourth and final trey at the buzzer.
Freshman forward
Ashlyn Rean finished with nine points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while Evans collected five points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals in the final game of her four-year career.
Long led the Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament champions with five assists.
