ANCHORAGE (Aug. 29) – Senior
Tia Allen had 12 kills and the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team played a dominant fifth set Friday to outlast No. 9 Chaminade 26-24, 20-25, 25-23, 25-27, 15-7 in the Alaska/Hawaii Challenge, presented by Alaska Airlines.
The Seawolves (3-0) also got nine kills and seven block assists from freshman rightside hitter
Bailee Tucker as they registered their first win over a ranked team under third-year head coach
Stacie Meisner.
The Silverswords were led by 11 kills and 12 digs from outside hitter Lillie Hinton, but the defending Pacific West Conference champions were outhit .193 to .133 overall and .500 to -.154 in the final set.
"That was another outstanding win, and a great team effort again," said Meisner, whose six primary hitters all recorded at least five kills. "
Emma (Beck) and
Johana (Malikova) really gave us a boost off the bench, and everyone played their roles well, especially in that fifth set."
Despite trailing by a 21-17 count in each of the first three sets, the Seawolves somehow found a way to take the first and third frames. Trailing 24-22 in the first, UAA capitalized on consecutive Silversword errors to tie it, and claimed the lead on an ace by sophomore
Martina Riba. Allen and sophomore middle blocker
Bella Burney followed with a block on set point for the 1-0 lead.
At 21-17 in the third, Beck and Burney teamed for a block to spark another winning surge. Setter
Hannah Trotter found an opening in the back corner to tie it 22-22, and Tucker ripped a kill for a 24-22 edge. After a UAA service error, Trotter came through with another kill on the second set point.
UAA earned a match point at 25-24 in the fourth set but could not capitalize, seeing the Vulcans cap a 3-0 run with a kill from Reina Krueger to send it the distance.
The Seawolves would never trail in the fifth, though, surging to a 6-2 lead on another kill by Tucker and a 10-3 advantage when Chaminade's Maylynn Mitchell committed an attack error. UAA had a perfect sideout percentage in the last set, registering seven kills on 14 attacks.
Riba finished with six kills and a career-high-tying seven total blocks, while Burney had five kills and seven block assists. Junior outside hitter
Lee Ivakina added 10 kills and six digs, while Beck – a redshirt freshman from Kenai – had six kills and three block assists in her Seawolf debut.
Trotter led UAA with 22 assists, along with 12 digs and three kills, and freshman setter
Johana Malikova also made a successful debut in Green & Gold with 21 assists and two aces.
Senior setter
Madison Galloway had 22 digs – 10 more than another other player in the match – as the Floridian became the 18th Seawolf to surpass 1,000 for her career, now with 1,006.
The Seawolves' victory, along with Hawaii Hilo's 3-2 win over Alaska Fairbanks in the subsequent match, sets up a Saturday 11:30 a.m. rematch between UAA and Hilo for the Alaska/Hawaii Challenge title. UAF will play Chaminade in the early match Saturday at 9 a.m. Find tickets and live links for both contests at GoSeawolves.com.
