ANCHORAGE (Aug. 4) – The Alaska Anchorage women's basketball roster added four talented players Monday as head coach
Matt Thune announced that
Cheyann Ashworth,
Kimberly Carrada Sanchez,
Jaela Reid and
Alba Sanz have committed to play for the Seawolves.
Ashworth, Carrada Sanchez and Reid join the program as transfers, while Sanz will be a true freshman.
A 6-1 forward, Ashworth played two seasons at junior college program Portland Community College in Oregon, averaging 7.0 points and 6.2 rebounds over 37 career games. The Adelaide, Australia, native posted 7.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.9 blocks over nine games as a sophomore before missing the final two-thirds of the season with an injury. As a freshman, Ashworth registered 6.8 ppg on 49 percent shooting and 6.1 rpg for a PCC squad that went 21-7 and made the NWAC Tournament.
Coach Thune says:
"Cheyann is a multidimensional forward who is comfortable being physical inside and also has the skill to step out to the perimeter and hit the three. I like the grit that she plays with and am excited to see how she grows in our system as I believe what we do complements her very well."
A 5-6 guard, Carrada Sanchez comes north after playing her freshman season at NAIA program Northwest University in Washington, where she led her team in scoring with 13.6 ppg, along with 4.0 rpg and 2.6 apg. The Kirkland, Wash., native recorded top-10 Cascade Collegiate Conference stats in free throw percentage (3rd, .821), steals (6th, 2.2 spg) and three-point percentage (9th, .377), while scoring double figures in 22 of 27 games. Carrada Sanchez starred at Juanita High School, making First Team All-KingCo as a senior and finishing her career with more than 1,000 points.
Coach Thune says:
"Kimberly had a great year as a freshman at Northwest University, and we are excited to have her join us. She has the ability to hit the three at a high percentage, and she's dynamic as a guard who can go off the bounce as well. I look forward to seeing her continued growth as a player in our system."
A 5-11 wing, Reid played her first two collegiate seasons at fellow NCAA Div. II program Davis & Elkins, drawing 24 starting assignments over 42 games. Prior to taking a redshirt season in 2024-25, she was the Senators' second-leading scorer as a sophomore, posting 7.8 ppg on .424 field-goal and .714 free-throw shooting. The Fort Meade, Md., native scored double figures in eight of her final 10 games at D&E, including a career-high-tying 15 points against Wheeling. Reid will join the Seawolves as a graduate student for the second semester after completing her bachelor's degree at D&E, and have 1.5 seasons of eligibility at UAA.
Coach Thune says:
"We will be looking forward to when Jaela arrives at the break after graduation as she will be an integral part of our team this year. Jaela brings veteran experience and leadership to the team with her personality. Her versatility to play both the guard and forwards spots will allow her to take advantage of mismatches on offense and stir things up for us on the defensive side."
A 5-11 guard, Sanz played all her high school-age seasons for Club Baloncesto Zaragoza, earning team MVP honors in 2024-25. She led CBZ and ranked eighth in her league in scoring, while leading the league in steals. In addition to making her National A1 League debut at age 15, Sanz helped her U16 and U18 squads to runner-up finishes at the Aragonese Championship three years in a row, capturing MVP honors at the U18 tournament.
Coach Thune says:
"Alba has great size for a guard at 5-11 and she has played the point guard position in Spain. I believe that her length and abilities to read the game will allow her to impact the team. She is very excited to come to Alaska, and we can't wait to get her here."
The foursome brings UAA's newcomer class to 10 players, joining incoming freshmen
