Seawolves crunch Coyotes, claim key region victory

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (Sept. 12) – Senior Tia Allen ripped 17 kills and junior Lee Ivakina had seven kills and 17 digs Friday to power the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 sweep of Cal State San Bernardino in the Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (8-1) also got 33 assists, three kills, 12 digs and two blocks from sophomore setter Hannah Trotter as they improved to 7-0 against fellow NCAA Div. II West Region teams.

Kisa Sagaio had 10 kills on .409 hitting for the Coyotes (4-1), who were the top team among 'others receiving votes' in this week's AVCA NCAA Div. II national top-25 poll.

"I'm proud of how we bounced back from yesterday (a 3-1 loss to Rollins) and came into this important match focused and determined to play better," said UAA head coach Stacie Meisner. "We played as a team and executed our game plan, giving us the edge we needed to win against a good opponent."

Aiming for their first win over CSUSB since 2016, the Seawolves never trailed in the opening set. Allen notched consecutive kills to give UAA a 20-12 advantage, and freshman rightside hitter Emma Beck converted on feeds from Trotter for the 24th and 25th points to repel a late Coyotes surge.

The second set featured eight ties and three lead changes before sophomore middle blocker Martina Riba gave UAA the lead for good, earning a kill and an ace on consecutive points to make it 16-14. CSUSB crept within 20-19, but Allen responded with kills on three of the final seven rallies, including set point.

The Coyotes took a brief 10-9 lead in the final set before the Seawolves answered with a 6-0 run, getting a pair of aces from senior libero Madison Galloway. Riba had two kills and three of her four block assists in the frame as UAA led by at least three the rest of the way.

Riba finished with a match-best .455 attack percentage and six kills, while Galloway's 16 digs moved her into the top 10 on UAA's career list, now with 1,092.

Beck and junior middle blocker Bella Burney combined for 10 kills, and each had three block assists.

The Seawolves conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule Saturday with an 11 a.m. first serve against Rockhurst (Mo.) at the Patty Center. Find links to live video ($) and stats at GoSeawolves.com.
