ANCHORAGE (Jan. 10) – Senior guard
Elaina Mack scored 21 points and sophomore forward
Mahaila Harrison had 17 points and 14 rebounds Saturday to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 76-41 rout of Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (10-4, 2-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 points, nine assists and three steals from freshman guard
Mylee Anderson as they won for the 34th time in the last 35 meetings with their in-state rival.
The Nanooks (0-13, 0-5) got 13 points from reserve guard Tamai Mancuso, plus 12 points and 10 rebounds from forward Jazlynn Novelli.
"I thought we really took control when our defensive pressure started to result in some fastbreak opportunities midway through the second quarter, and we started to cash in," said UAA head coach
Matt Thune, whose team forced 24 turnovers and held a 58-39 rebounding edge. "Lots of credit to our bench tonight, especially
Jennifer Nash, who gave us a shot in the arm with her energy and hustle, and
Taylor Searcey, who battled illness all week and still gave us eight points, eight boards and five assists."
After claiming just a 12-10 lead in the opening quarter and trailing 13-12 early in the second, the Seawolves went ahead for good on a baseline jumper by Mack. Anderson scored on a feed from freshman
Alba Sanz, Nash finished on the break off a pass from Searcey, and Mack continued the 11-0 surge with her first three-pointer of the night.
UAA led by double figures for the game's final 23 minutes, claiming a 33-17 halftime advantage and going up 50-30 on a nifty layup by Sanz at the 3:21 mark of the third quarter.
Harrison added two assists, three steals and two blocks as the VCU transfer recorded her fourth double-double. Mack shot 8 of 15 overall and 5 of 9 on threes, along with five rebounds, three assists, four steals, a block and no turnovers.
Anderson shot 4 of 8 and dished her second-most assists in her freshman campaign, while fellow Alaskan rookie Nash posted four points and season highs of seven rebounds (five offensive) and two steals.
A freshman from Spain, Sanz had three points and a season-high five rebounds, plus one assist and no turnovers.
