FAIRBANKS, ALASKA – Jacob Terpstra scored in the shootout to give Alaska Anchorage a 2-1 lead in the first game of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup Friday.
The Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup switched to a point system this season with a win in regulation worth three points, an overtime or shootout win worth two points and an overtime or shootout loss worth one point.
Michael Citara scored the game's opening goal for the Nanooks by beating Seawolf goalie Tyler Krivtsov glove side at 3:05 of the first period.
Aaron Reierson tied the game at 1-1 in the final minute of the first period when he deked out UAF netminder Lassi Lehti. Pavol Funtek recorded a point for the second-straight game with an assist on the goal. Karter McNarland contributed his team-leading 10th assist of the season.
The UAA penalty kill unit was given the ultimate test late when the Seawolves were whistled for a five-minute major and game misconduct for kneeing with 22 seconds remaining in the third period.
Alaska Anchorage killed off the penalty that spanned most of the overtime period and the two teams headed to a shootout.
Jacob Terpstra scored for the Seawolves in the first round, and Tyler Krivtsov stopped all three Nanook shots.
UAA finished with a 30-29 edge in shots. The Seawolves were 0-for-6 on the powerplay and held the Nanooks 0-for-3.
The two teams will face off in game two of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup Saturday.
