Vikings fend off Seawolves in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Jan. 17) – Sophomore forward Mahaila Harrison led a second-half comeback with 20 points, but the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team fell short Saturday in an 81-65 loss to Western Washington at Carver Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (11-5, 3-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 13 points and five assists from freshman guard Mylee Anderson and 12 points apiece from guards Elaina Mack and Kimberly Carrada Sanchez as they were outshot 50 percent (31 of 62) to 32 percent (19 of 58).

The Vikings (14-5, 6-2) were led by 21 points and 11 rebounds from center Olivia Hodges and 21 points, five rebounds and four steals from guard Libby Stump, outrebounding UAA 44-30.

After erasing an early 10-point deficit in Thursday's 79-72 win at Simon Fraser, the Seawolves could not recreate the same magic, falling behind 13-0 and trailing 43-28 at halftime.

UAA trailed 47-29 one minute into the third quarter before consecutive scores from Mack and Harrison sparked a 14-4 rally to get back into it. Anderson and Harrison sandwiched three-pointers around a WWU basket to slice it to 54-50 at the 3:20 mark of the third, but Hodges answered with an and-one layup, helping the Vikings retain a 63-56 lead at the final quarter break.

Harrison scored four points over the next two minutes to stay within 65-60, only to see the Vikings pull away with the next seven points.

The GNAC's third-leading scorer entering the week, Harrison shot 3 of 7 from long range and 5 of 6 on free throws, reaching the 20-point plateau for the seventh time.

Mack shot 3 of 8 on threes as the King Cove native moved into the top 20 on UAA's career scoring list, now standing 19th with 976 points.

UAA concludes the first half of the GNAC round-robin schedule next week with 5:15 pm tips Thursday against Seattle Pacific and Saturday against Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center. Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
