ANCHORAGE (Jan. 23) –
Hasaan Herrington scored 16 points, including the game-clinching free throws with nine seconds remaining Thursday, helping Alaska Anchorage to a 54-50 men's basketball victory over Seattle Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (13-6, 5-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a combined 17 points and 17 rebounds from the interior duo of
Sylas Williams (9 pts/8 rebs) and
Bishop Tosi (8 pts/9 rebs), each of whom scored critical baskets in the final two minutes.
The Falcons (8-7, 3-5) were led by 18 points and eight rebounds from center post Trace Evans and 10 points from starting guard Julian Mora, but the visitors were hurt by 13 turnovers and forced only eight by the Seawolves.
"I thought we defended at a high level," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "Guys really stuck to the game plan defensively , holding a really good, efficient team well below their average (72.3 ppg). Offensively, I thought we executed well.
Cole Johnson and Bishop hooked up some important plays down the stretch, and once we stopped letting them force turnovers, we got even more good looks."
Meeting their second-most frequent opponent for the 91st time, the Seawolves scratched out a 25-20 halftime lead behind eight points from Herrington, along with five points and six rebounds from senior guard
Akok Machar in the opening 20 minutes.
In a game that featured six ties, seven lead changes and no lead larger than seven points, the Falcons rallied to tie it 33-33 on a jumper by Mora with 12:16 remaining. Evans put the visitors up 39-35 on a putback, but UAA got a big lift from reserve point guard
Jermiah Coleman, who registered a rebound that led to a fastbreak layup, then stole the ball and hit a jumper to draw back even.
The game stayed within a single possession from the 8:25 mark until the final 30 seconds, with the Falcons taking their final advantage at 46-45 on a free throw with 2:27 left. Late in the shot clock on its next possession, UAA went ahead when Johnson sliced through the lane and made a no-look bounce pass through traffic to Tosi, who converted the layup.
The same pair hooked up again following a defensive stop to make it 49-46, and SPU's Connor Drinkwine answered with a 17-foot jumper with 37 seconds showing. On the ensuing inbounds play, Tosi fired a long baseball pass to Williams, who outleaped a Falcon defender for the ball and raced in for a layup and foul, rattling home the free throw as well.
A front-end free-throw miss by Tosi allowed Mora to slice it to 52-20 with 11 seconds left, before Herrington calmly sank both ends of a one-and-one for the clinching points.
Johnson matched his career high with eight assists, while committing no turnovers, and Machar finished with seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Junior guard
Elijah Mobley added nine points on 4-of-6 shooting off the bench.
The 104 combined points were seven less than the previous low in series history as SPU's six-game win streak over UAA came to an end.
The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to face Montana State Billings (16-5, 5-3 GNAC). Find tickets, live links and more at GoSeawolves.com.
