Searcey logs triple-double as UAA drops 2OT thriller

ANCHORAGE (Jan. 24) – Senior Taylor Searcey logged the first triple-double for Alaska Anchorage in 20 years with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists Saturday, but it wasn't enough as the hosts suffered a 92-91 double-overtime loss to Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (11-7, 3-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 23 points and six rebounds from sophomore forward Mahaila Harrison, while senior guard Elaina Mack had 15 points to surpass 1,000 for her career.

The Yellowjackets (12-10, 4-5) got 25 points and 17 rebounds from forward Rae Smart and 19 points and 12 rebounds from Cassie Chestnut as they utilized a whopping 28 offensive rebounds to outscore UAA 33-2 in second-chance points.

Meeting MSUB for the first time since UAA's 69-66 NCAA First Round win last March, the Seawolves controlled the opening half with a 47-40 advantage at the break and held the lead for nearly 38 minutes.

The Yellowjackets took a 74-73 lead with 76 seconds remaining in regulation, and the Seawolves sent it to overtime when Harrison split a pair of free throws with three seconds left.

A back-and-forth first extra session saw Smart convert a putback to make it 81-80 with 21 seconds left, and Kyla Momberg (26 pts, 7 rebs) sank two free throws following a UAA miss. Mack was up to the task, though, swishing a deep trey with 1.1 seconds showing.

The second overtime was a one-possession affair as well, with Kimberly Carrada Sanchez nailing a three-pointer to tie it 90-90 with 32 seconds left. MSUB called timeout and set up Momberg for a drive that she converted off glass with three seconds on the clock. UAA freshman Mylee Anderson got to the line with a chance to tie with sixth-tenths of a tick remaining, but the Wasilla product missed the second charity after swishing the first, and the clock expired on the rebound scramble.

Searcey's triple-double was the first for a Seawolf since Rebecca Kielpinski had 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists against Saint Martin's on Feb. 18, 2006.

Harrison shot 9 of 14 from the field and nabbed three steals, but fouled out late in the first overtime.

Mack nailed three three-pointers as she also tied Jessica Madison (2012-16) for third place on UAA's career list with 216 treys, while Anderson finished with 11 points, three assists and two blocks.

The Seawolves return to the road next week to face league-leading Central Washington on Thursday and Northwest Nazarene on Saturday. Find live links at GoSeawolves.com.
