Lady Chaps outlast Seawolves in OT, 63-56

HONOLULU (Nov. 1) – Guard Sheridan Liggett led a late Alaska Anchorage charge with 18 points to force overtime, but Lubbock Christian found its shooting stroke in the extra session to claim a 63-56 women's basketball victory Sunday in the consolation final of the Hoops In Hawaii Tip-Off Classic at T.C. Ching Athletic Center.

The Seawolves (1-2) also got 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals from sophomore guard Mylee Anderson, along with 15 points from junior guard Bridgette Tello in the loss.

The Lady Chaps (2-1), who are coming off a 23-8 season and picked fourth of 17 teams in the Lone Star Conference, were led by 25 points, eight rebounds and three assists from guard Kennedy Chappell.

Playing for the first time since Lubbock Christian's 78-73 victory in the 2016 NCAA Div. II title game, Sunday's rematch featured a smaller stage but an equal amount of drama.

Both teams took their largest leads of the day – UAA at 9-4 and LCU at 20-13 – in the opening quarter, before the game turned into a defensive slugfest. The Seawolves managed a 27-24 lead at the halftime break thanks to 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from Anderson, and both squads struggled to score in the third quarter.

Amber Kartchner nailed a corner trey to put UAA ahead 37-35, only to see LCU answer 20 seconds later, retaking the lead on a three-point play by Mattie Dollar. Liggett scored three times in the final three minutes to force ties, but neither team could crack the scoreboard in the final 45 seconds.

Another Liggett basket kept the game tied 51-51 early in the overtime session, before Kaelie Massenburg pulled the Lady Chaps ahead for good with a floater in the lane, and Chappell converted another three-point play. Chappell finished with eight points in OT as her team shot 6 of 7 from the field and 4 of 5 on free throws.

Anderson shot 7 of 12, Liggett 8 of 15 and Tello 5 of 11 from the field, with Anderson draining both of her three-point attempts. Senior forward Lillee Duffin matched Anderson with a team-high seven rebounds.

The Seawolves make their home debut Friday (7 pm) and Saturday (2 pm), hosting College of Idaho at the Alaska Airlines Center. Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
