Falcons snap Seawolves' 5-game streak, 67-59

SEATTLE (Feb. 21) – Junior forward Sylas Williams scored 13 points, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not sustain a hot start Saturday in a 67-59 loss to Seattle Pacific at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

The Seawolves (19-8, 11-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 points and five rebounds from senior forward Bishop Tosi as their five-game winning streak came to an end.

The Falcons (13-11, 8-9) got 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and seven rebounds from guard Henry Sandberg as they shot 27 of 48 (.563) against UAA's league-leading defense.

"We had some uncharacteristic turnovers during that stretch midway through the second half, and SPU took advantage with some good shot-making," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team remains one game ahead of Northwest Nazarene (16-9, 10-6) for the second GNAC Tournament quarterfinal bye. Both teams conclude the regular season with a pair of home contests next week.

Looking to sweep the Falcons for the first time since 2016-17, UAA came out strong despite the absence of second-leading scorer and assist leader Hasaan Herrington, who suffered a lower-leg injury in Thursday's victory at Montana State Billings.

Williams scored seven points during a 9-0 run that gave the Seawolves a 22-14 lead with nine minutes before halftime, and John McFadden scored inside for a 24-19 edge at the 6:52 mark. The Falcons continued to chip away, however, and pulled within 35-33 when Sandberg closed the half with a three-pointer.

SPU continued its momentum with the first five points after the break and never trailed during a second half that remained close throughout. UAA tied it 45-45 when Parker Kroon cashed a three-pointer with 12:37 left, only to see the Falcons take control with a 9-0 run.

After trading baskets for several possessions, Elijah Mobley scored on a short floater and Akok Machar canned a corner three to slice it to 58-55 with three minutes to go, and the Seawolves had a chance to tie after a defensive stop. Mobley's ensuing jumper missed though, and Connor Drinkwine answered with a trey at the other end.

Tosi and Williams posted identical lines of 5-of-11 shooting and five rebounds, while Mobley and Machar each had nine points and two boards. Machar added game highs of three assists, three steals and three blocks, and junior guard Cole Johnson had eight points and three assists.

UAA concludes the regular season with games Thursday (5:15 pm) against Western Oregon and Saturday (7:30 pm) against league-leading Saint Martin's at the Alaska Airlines Center. Find tickets, live links and more at GoSeawolves.com.
