ANCHORAGE (Feb. 28) – Alaska Anchorage women's basketball seniors
Taylor Searcey and
Elaina Mack combined for 31 points and 18 rebounds in their final game Saturday, but it wasn't enough in a 66-51 loss to Saint Martin's at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (16-11, 8-10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 rebounds and a career-high-tying five assists from junior center
Lillee Duffin as they outrebounded the visitors 40-37.
The Saints (18-9, 14-4) – ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Div. II West Region – were led by 15 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and five steals from forward Avery Oaster as they finished in a second-place tie in the GNAC standings.
"Our seniors poured their hearts into this program in a way that goes far beyond the stat sheet," said first-year UAA head coach
Matt Thune. "They helped shape our culture, and I'm grateful for what they've given – it will leave a lasting impact. Though we ultimately did not meet all our ambitions this season, I am proud of this group and what we accomplished. Elaina was our only returner player on the roster in June. We brought together a bunch of people who did not know each other, established foundations of our culture and program, and became a basketball family. We will use what we have learned and gone through this season to come back stronger next year."
Looking to stay perfect in 10 all-time meetings with SMU at the Alaska Airlines Center, the Seawolves could not get rolling offensively for the first three quarters. UAA trailed 12-10 when
Kimberly Carrada Sanchez swished a stepback three-pointer at the 2:32 mark of the first quarter, but UAA would not score for the next five minutes and trailed 31-17 at halftime.
The Saints pushed their largest lead to 60-30 early in the fourth quarter before the Seawolves corrected course with an 16-0 run, getting 15 of those points from Mack and Searcey.
Searcey finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals, surpassing 1,000 career points in her NCAA Div. II career, which included three seasons at Valdosta State.
Mack had 15 points on 4-of-13 three-point shooting, nine rebounds, two assists and no turnovers in her 112th and final game in Green & Gold. The King Cove product finished No. 14 on UAA's career scoring list with 1,128 points, along with No. 3 in three-pointers made with 237, missing a share of the school record by just two treys. With eight treys in the last two games, Mack did claim another school record, however, with her 2.11 three-pointers per game breaking the 26-year-old record of 2.09 held by Tirzah Church.
