Tosi, Herrington propel 77-70 win over Wildcats

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 5) – Seniors Bishop Tosi and Hasaan Herrington recorded career-high efforts and the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team repelled a late run by Central Washington to earn a 77-70 victory Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (16-7, 8-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got 30 points on 13-of-16 shooting and eight rebounds from Tosi, while Herrington had 13 points, six rebounds and 14 assists – the most for a Seawolf since 2014 – as they earned a season sweep of the visitors from Ellensburg. Junior forward Sylas Williams added 14 points on 5-of-9 accuracy and nine rebounds to help UAA to its second-best shooting night against a D-II opponent this season.

The Wildcats (11-11, 5-6) got 16 points and six rebounds from reserve forward Chae Haynes, but were outshot .536 to .429 and committed six more turnovers than UAA (16-10).

"We didn't play our best game, but we stuck together and got some big stops and clutch rebounds down the stretch on both ends," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose program clinched its 38th winning record in 48 years of play. "Bishop made some great shots and Hasaan fought through cramps in the second half to give us huge performances."

Looking to stay tied with Montana State Billings for second in the GNAC standings, UAA fell behind 6-0 and 15-9 before getting its footing. Tosi put the hosts ahead 18-17 on a jumper midway through the first half, and the Bartlett High product swished a three-pointer to snap a 25-25 tie and regain the lead for good.

The Seawolves increased a 35-31 halftime lead to 42-33 when Tosi converted an assist from Cole Johnson at the 18:06 mark, but the Wildcats would rally within 51-50 when Haynes completed a traditional three-point play with 11:20 remaining.

UAA responded with a 13-3 surge over the next six minutes as Herrington scored or assisted on all five field goals in the stretch, before the East Anchorage High alum had to leave the game temporarily due to leg cramps.

Central used Herrington's absence to make another run, eventually pulling within 69-66 on a three-point play by Eli Williams at the 1:23 mark. With the shot clock running down on the ensuing possession, Tosi snagged a miss by teammate Akok Machar and converted the putback to give the Seawolves some breathing room, and junior guard Elijah Mobley followed with a top-of-the-key block on Bradley Swillie's three-point attempt and fast-break layup to make it 74-67 with 29 seconds left.

Tosi's 30 points were also a UAA season high as he shot 2 of 3 from long range and dished two assists with just one turnover in 33 minutes. His 13-of-16 accuracy ranked No. 4 on UAA's single-game list for field-goal percentage with a minimum of 15 attempts.

Meanwhile, Herrington earned his second career double-double and tied for No. 8 on UAA's single-game assists list. The 14 dimes tied for fifth-most by a Seawolf against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent, while tying for 10th-most on the GNAC single-game list.

Machar and Johnson tallied six points apiece and combined for five assists, and Mobley finished with five points and four rebounds.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. to host Northwest Nazarene (13-7, 7-4). Find tickets and more at GoSeawolves.com.
