The University of Alaska Anchorage Department of Athletics launched a new ‘Reading With the Seawolves’ program in 2016-17, teaming with the Anchorage School District and The University of Alaska College Savings Plan to encourage reading among grade-school children.
Designed as an incentive program, students from any local elementary school who read at least five books will be eligible to receive free tickets to any Seawolf home game, plus be entered to win a $2,000 UA College Savings Plan scholarship. Students must complete a custom bookmark (which includes parental contact information) to complete the process, with the scholarship drawing set for Feb. 25 at the final home hockey game.
As part of the effort, UAA's Department of Athletics student-athletes, coaches and staff will visit classrooms across the municipality to read to students and encourage participation in the program.
