ANCHORAGE (Oct. 24, 2018) – The University of Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team welcomed its newest member Wednesday, signing 5-year-old James Ludwig of Eagle River to a letter of intent.
In partnership with national non-profit organization TEAM IMPACT, James joins the Seawolves’ roster for two seasons, taking part in team activities such as practices, games, team dinners and more.
“As Coach (Ryan) Orton and I looked at our roster needs for this season, we determined we needed to add someone with grit, determination, perseverance and a ‘never-quit’ attitude, who would impact our entire team,” said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne during Wednesday’s signing ceremony, in front of a crowded Alaska Airlines Center press room. “It took longer than we anticipated, as we were searching for a special individual, but with the help of TEAM IMPACT, we were finally able to identify that person – James.”
Alongside with his mother Michelle, brother Nathan, sister Lily, and service dog Blitzen, James was presented with his Seawolf jersey after signing his ceremonial letter and answering a few questions from his new teammates.
“We were very excited when we got TEAM IMPACT’s call,” said Michelle Ludwig. “It gives our family support and relationship building, which, being a special-needs family, you’re a little isolated. “So having this opportunity for everyone in our family, and especially James, is really great.”
This marks the first match between TEAM IMPACT and an Alaska sports team. TEAM IMPACT is a non-profit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with local college athletic teams, forming lifelong bonds and affecting positive outcomes.
