ANCHORAGE - Junior guard Diana Gundersen smashed her career-high with 15 points to lead the University of Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 74-47 romp over Western New Mexico at the Sports Center tonight.
Gundersen shot 7-of-10 from the field for UAA (5-11, 3-8 Pac West), while Allison Gross led the Mustangs (0-16, 0-11) with 14 points.
Senior forward Kellie Larrabee had a game-high 10 rebounds and scored eight points to spark the Seawolves, who began the game sluggishly.
Western New Mexico jumped to leads of 8-2 and 16-11 at the outset, before an 8-0 run gave the Seawolves a 19-16 advantage and a lead they would never relinquish. Gundersen, a native of Sand Point, came off the bench and was involved in every point in the game-changing run, dishing two assists and knocking down two jumpers. She had scored only two points all season before Thursday, and her previous career-high was three points. Gundersen also set a career-best with three assists.
Senior guard/forward Tiffany Massey had her typical all-around performance with nine points, eight assists, six rebounds and six steals. Junior center Bell Jordan was the only other Seawolf to reach double-digit points with 10.
The 74 points were a team season-high as were UAA's 25 assists. It was also the Seawolves' largest margin of victory this year.
UAA will try for a third straight win Saturday when it hosts Montana State-Billings at 7:05 p.m. at the Sports Center.
