ANCHORAGE (Dec. 17) - Amber Nasby and Kamie Jo Massey filled up the stat sheet Wednesday as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team returned from a 10-day layoff with a 72-58 victory over Western New Mexico at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
UAA (5-2) also got 16 points from Mindy Mendenhall and 10 from Tanya Nizich. WNMU (3-5) had its three-game winning streak snapped despite 18 points from guard Elyza Schafer and an 11-point, 14-rebound effort from center Ivanna Stojkovic.
The Seawolves took control with a strong first half, shooting 50 percent (16 of 32) to earn a 40-25 lead at the break.
WNMU fought back quickly to open the second half, putting together a 19-4 run to pull within 44-42 at the 12:18 mark. Nasby, who scored a career-high 22 points (9-16 FG, 4-4 FT) then answered with a jumper in the lane and Massey followed with a traditional three-point play to reestablish the lead at 49-42.
The Mustangs twice scratched within four points over the next few minutes, but would come no closer.
Massey had her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The all-conference guard/forward also had six assists, four blocks, four steals and zero turnovers in 37 minutes.
Nasby had a strong all-around game with nine rebounds, a block and two steals, while Mendenhall had a pair of UAA's season-high eight blocks.
The Seawolves and Mustangs get together on the same court Saturday night in the final game of the Glacier Classic at 8 p.m. UAA will play Montana State-Billings on Friday. Other matchups for the event include UAF against WNMU (Friday, 6 p.m.) and UAF-MSUB (Saturday, 6 p.m.).
