MONMOUTH, Ore. (Nov. 11) - Katina Ozrelic and Carolyn DeKay came up big at the crucial moments Thursday night as the UAA volleyball team held on for a 30-28, 30-18, 14-30, 19-30, 15-13 victory over Western Oregon.
The Seawolves (12-13, 6-11 GNAC) won their second straight match behind Ozrelic's season-high 18 kills, DeKay's 16 kills and Jenny Mitchell's double-double effort.
Western Oregon (8-17, 4-13) dropped its seventh straight match despite roaring back from a 2-0 deficit and taking the Seawolves to the brink. Nicole Kludt and Mandy Veley led the home team with 18 kills apiece.
UAA's victory hinged on key plays at the end of the first and fifth games.
In Game 1, the Seawolves forged a 29-24 advantage only to see the Wolves rally for the next four points. It was then that Ozrelic, a senior playing the next-to-last match of her career in her home state, put it away with a kill. The Bend native wound up with a spectacular .552 hitting percentage, getting her 18 kills in just 29 attempts.
The Seawolves dominated Game 2, only to fall flat in the third and fourth frames.
The final game was a wild affair, with 11 ties and four lead changes. After WOU edged ahead 13-12, UAA fought back and won the next two points on attack errors by Kim Tower (14 kills, 18 digs). DeKay then put the match in the books with her final kill on a feed from Mitchell.
Mitchell finished with 11 kills and 10 digs for her team-best eighth double-double of the season. DeKay recorded an impressive .389 hitting percentage, while libero Rachael Knecht had a match-high 25 digs. It was the 11th time the freshman has made 25 or more digs this year.
Freshman setter Bethan Murphy came through with 50 assists, three aces and a career-best 15 digs.
UAA clinched seventh place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings and has a chance to get back to the .500 mark when it finishes the season Saturday at last-place Humboldt State (6 p.m. AST) in Arcata, Calif.
