Wildcats nip men, 73-72

ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Dec. 31) - Chris Bannish made one of two free throws with one second left Saturday to send the UAA men's basketball team to its second heartbreaking road loss in three nights, 73-72 against Central Washington.

The Seawolves (9-5, 0-2 GNAC) got 14 points and 10 rebounds from James Hartman, while fellow senior Kemmy Burgess led the team with 16 points. CWU (7-4, 2-0) was led by forward Lance Den Boer's 20 points, while Bannish had 14 points and five assists.

The game featured and 22 lead changes, and the 11th tie came when Burgess made it 72-72 on a three-pointer with 27 seconds to play. That was the highlight of the night, however, for Burgess, who was held four points under his scoring average and shot just 5 of 15 from the field.

On the final possession, Den Boer's missed jumper was rebounded by Bannish, who drew the foul from Aaron Lawrence with one tick showing. The Wildcats' senior point guard made the first and purposely missed the second, allowing UAA's Joe Davis a mere desperation heave at the buzzer.

Senior forward Brian Hills was the third Seawolf to score in double figures, tallying 11 points (5-9 FG) and six rebounds.

The loss came two nights after a 112-106 overtime loss at third-ranked Western Washington.

UAA next returns home for a Thursday (Jan. 5) showdown against Seattle University at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. That game tips off at 7 p.m. AST.
