FAIRBANKS (Dec. 10) -
Kemmy Burgess scored 19 points, including 17 in last 17 minutes, and the UAA men's basketball team used an incredible shooting performance to record a 90-80 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii in the Glacier Classic at the Patty Center.
UAA (7-3) set a school record by making all 24 of its free throws, and shot 54.7 percent from the field. BYUH (2-2), which shot 53.6 percent itself, was led by senior Austin Smylie's game-high 27 points.
The Seawolves trailed by as many as eight points in the first half and found themselves down 31-24 with a minute remaining. Carl Arts then dished one of his career-high five assists on an Adam Fitt-Chappell three-pointer, and James Hartman knocked home a jumper at the buzzer to bring UAA within two at the break.
After missing their first six shots in the second half, the Seawolves could seemingly do no wrong. A pair of free throws by Fitt-Chappell gave UAA a 33-31 edge, and Burgess followed with a jumper on the next possession. That basket sparked a Seawolf shooting spree that included 18 makes in their final 22 attempts.
Burgess (6-12 FG, 8-8 FT) gave UAA its biggest lead at 63-51 with a pair of free throws, but the Seasiders showed fight with an 8-0 run to pull within four. Sophomore point guard Luke Cooper had the answer, though, nailing a three-pointer to re-establish UAA's momentum. BYUH could get no closer than 86-80 with a minute left, before Burgess ended the game with four straight charities.
Cooper (3-3 FG, 4-4 FT) scored 11 points to give him a career-high for the second straight night, while Arts tallied 15 points (6-9 FG, 3-4 3FG), Brian Hills had 11 points, and Joe Davis scored 10 (3-5 FG, 4-4 FT).
Hills also accounted for four assists, plus team-highs of six rebounds and two blocks. He was named the Glacier Classic's Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the All-Classic Team by Burgess.
Smylie kept the Seasiders close most of the night, hitting 10 of 14 from the field and all six of his free throws. BYUH, which had previously captured wins against UAA conference foes Alaska Fairbanks and fourth-ranked Western Washington, also got 20 points (7-11 FG) from guard Paul Peterson.
UAA's perfection from the charity stripe bettered one of the program's oldest records, topping a 96.2 percent (25-26) effort against Hawaii-Hilo on Jan. 20, 1982.
The Seawolves are off for finals and take the court again Dec. 19 and 20 when they host Walla Walla College at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Those games, which both tip at 7:30 p.m., conclude the non-conference portion of UAA's schedule.
