No. 4 SPU downs men with late rally

SEATTLE (Jan. 12) - Kemmy Burgess had another solid game with 25 points and six assists, but fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific showed just a little more firepower Thursday, overcoming the Seawolves for an 87-80 men's basketball victory at Brougham Pavilion.

UAA (11-6, 2-3 GNAC) also got 19 points from forward Brian Hills and 10 points from swingman Adam Fitt-Chappell in the loss. SPU (12-1, 4-0) won its sixth straight behind point guard Tony Binetti's near triple-double of 21 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds.

The Seawolves led 40-34 at halftime and took their largest advantage when Hills scored on the first possession of the second half. But the game would tighten from there, finally resulting in 11 lead changes.

UAA point guard Aaron Lawrence (6 points, 6 assists, 0 turnovers) gave the visitors their final lead, 76-74, on a three-pointer with 3:38 remaining. However, the Falcons put together a 6-0 run to take control, and the Seawolves never got another chance to tie. Binetti finally sealed the spirited affair with a three-pointer at the 24-second mark that made it 85-80.

SPU hit 10 of 18 treys on the night, beating the Seawolves at their strongest skill. UAA, which entered with NCAA Div. II-best 45.6 percent team three-point shooting, hit just 8 of 21 (38.1 percent) on the night.

The Seawolves get their fourth chance at a GNAC road win when they travel Saturday to Nampa, Idaho, to face Northwest Nazarene (6-7, 1-3). That game tips off at 5 p.m. AST and can be heard on AM-550 KTZN 'The Zone.'
