Seawolves slam Nanooks, 3-1

ANCHORAGE - Junior middle blocker Kim Stolk had dominating performances on both sides of the net with 11 kills and nine blocks Wednesday, leading the Seawolves to a 30-25, 21-30, 31-29, 30-25 volleyball victory over arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Sophomore outside hitter Brenda Cooper also delivered 11 kills for the Seawolves (5-13, 2-8 GNAC), who won their second straight match. UAF (5-12, 4-6) was led by 14 kills from Megan Thigpen.

Tied at a game apiece and 27-27 in the third, the Nanooks appeared to take control with an ace by Thigpen (4 aces) and a kill by Jessica Hill (12 kills). But Seawolf head coach Michelle Earl used a timeout to stop the momentum, and her team rallied back with the next four points, including one of freshman Meghan Koizumi's four service aces.

The fourth game was dominated by the Seawolves, who held off a late Nanook charge to capture their fourth straight overall in the head-to-head series. UAF has not won in Anchorage since 2000, a string of six in a row.

Stolk sparked the home team with nearly flawless hitting, blasting her 11 kills on only 22 attempts without a single attack error. The JC transfer contributed her career-high attack percentage (.500), and her nine blocks (2 solo, 7 assists) were the most for a Seawolf this year.

Senior libero Rachael Knecht also registered a team season-high with 24 digs.

UAA outblocked UAF 17-6, posting the most stuffs for the team this year as well.

Cooper and senior Chelsey Jones (9 kills) had seven total blocks apiece, and junior Paepaetele Poasa had a career-best 18 digs. Freshman setter Tehane Kahalehau ran an efficient Seawolf offense to the tune of 38 assists and four kills.

The Seawolves have little time to rest before boarding a late flight to Idaho where they will take on Dixie (Utah) State in a non-conference affair Friday. That match will be played on the campus of Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho, and will be followed Saturday with a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match against NNU.
