MANKATO ? Alaska Anchorage's attempt to earn its first ever sweep at Minnesota State fell short tonight as the home standing Mavericks salvaged a series split with a 3-2 victory in Western College Hockey Association action here in front of 3,529 fans at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center.
The Seawolves (4-4-2, 2-4-0 WCHA) led 1-0 on junior Peter Cartwright's first goal of the season at 6:51 of the opening period, but MSU (3-7-0, 2-4-0 WCHA) would score three unanswered goals, including two second-period tallies by Steve Wagner, to get the win.
Junior defenseman Luke Beaverson would bring the ?Wolves to within one midway through the third with his second goal of the season, but UAA would be unable to tie the game and send it into overtime.
The Mavericks, who ended a six-game losing streak with the victory, outshot the Seawovles 29-24, including 13-5 in the second frame. MSU connected for the game's lone power-play tally for the second straight night, going 1-of-5, while UAA was scoreless for the second consecutive game at 0-of-3.
Goalie Nathan Lawson made 26 saves in the loss, while MSU's Mike Zacharies stopped 22.
Sophomore Shane Lovdahl and freshman Ken Selby earned assists on Cartwright's goal and sophomore Mat Robinson and freshman Josh Lunden scored helpers on Beaverson's goal.
Junior Chris Tarkir led UAA in shots on net with four.
The Seawolves return home next weekend for a two-game WCHA series with North Dakota at Sullivan Arena, Nov. 17-18.
