Three-goal third clinches Seawolf sweep

ANCHORAGE ? A three-goal third period sealed a home ice sweep for the Alaska Anchorage hockey team as it earned a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over rival Alaska Fairbanks in the fourth and final game of the annual Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup series here tonight in front of 5,008 fans at Sullivan Arena.

Trailing 2-0 midway through the second period, the Seawolves (10-8-2) would score four unanswered goals to clinch an unbeaten 3-0-1 season mark over the Nanooks (7-7-4) for the first time since 2000-01. The home sweep, UAA's second this year, was its first over UAF since March 2000.

Senior forward Justin Bourne and freshman defenseman Nils Backstrom each tallied two assists to lead the ?Wolves' scoring efforts, while senior Chad Anderson, freshmen Kevin Clark and Paul Crowder and junior Peter Cartwright would all score goals.

Freshman netminder Jon Olthuis, who improved to 1-0-1 in two career starts against UAF, registered 18 saves to earn his second win of the season.

After surrendering a shorthanded goal in the first period to UAF's Lucas Burnett
(9:27) and a second-period power-play tally to Curtis Fraser (8:47), the Seawolves would finally get on the scoreboard when Anderson would drill a hard slapper from the high slot for a power-play score at 12:06 of the second.

Clark would spark a productive third period by the Seawolves by knotting the game with the first of three UAA goals at the 2:07 mark. Clark skated through a few Nanook defenders before nudging a quick wrister past UAF goalie Chad Johnson (26 saves) at the right post.

Crowder, who scored two goals in Friday's Cup clinching 4-1 win, tallied the eventual game winner at 5:46 from the low right circle after receiving a perfect cross ice setup pass from Backstrom. The goal was nearly UAA's second power-play score of the game, but a penalty to UAF's Natahn Fornataro had expired one second prior to Crowder's goal.

Cartwright added an empty netter for the second straight game to clinch the win.

After committing nine penalties through the first two periods of play, including six in the second, the Seawolves did not send one player to the penalty box in the deciding third frame.

UAA, who outshot the Nanooks 30-20, went 1-for-8 on the power play, including going scoreless in four man-advantage opportunities in the first period. UAF went 1-for-5 on the power play.

The Seawolves resume their WCHA slate next Friday and Saturday (Jan. 5-6) with a two-game road series at St. Cloud State.
