Seawolves swat Saints to even GNAC mark

LACEY, Wash. (Feb. 2) - Led by a game-high 21 points from senior Kemmy Burgess, the UAA men's basketball team regained its three-point touch and posted its first road victory of the season Thursday, 72-56 over Saint Martin's at the SMU Pavilion.

UAA (14-8, 5-5 GNAC) also got 13 points from senior swingman James Hartman and 10 points from sophomore forward Joe Davis. SMU (6-13, 1-9) lost despite double-doubles by forward Niko Nunogawa (19 pts, 10 reb.) and center Brendan Campbell (14 pts, 10 reb.).

It was the first road victory for UAA in six tries thus far, all Great Northwest Athletic Conference games. The Seawolves - who were coming off a season-worst 4-of-19 three-point showing in their last game, a 3-point loss at Alaska Fairbanks - hit 50 percent (8 of 16) against the Saints, including 3 of 3 for Burgess.

UAA entered the contest leading all of NCAA Div. II in three-point percentage at .447.

After trailing by five points early and down 22-21 with just over four minutes left in the first half, UAA went on an 11-2 run to close the period and take control. Hartman scored the first seven points of the blitz on a pair of free throws, a three-pointer and a layup.

The Seawolves extended the run by scoring the first 11 points of the second half, and eventually took their largest lead of the night, 51-26, on a Hartman layup with 13:57 to play.

The Saints, who are winless in GNAC home games, cut their deficit to 13 on a couple of occasions late, but never got closer.

Hartman grabbed a UAA season-best six steals, while point guard Luke Cooper improved on his average of 6.2 assists per game with nine dishes. Cooper also had four steals, while Davis and senior forward Brian Hills paced the team with seven rebounds each.

The Seawolves play another key game Saturday as they take on fellow playoff 'bubble' team Seattle University (11-8, 4-6) at the Archbishop Connolly Center. That game tips at 6 p.m. AST and can be heard on AM-550 KTZN "The Zone," or over the internet on this site.
