MONMOUTH, Ore. -- Caitlin Grenier smacked 12 kills and Jessica Morehouse tallied a career-high 10, but the Seawolf volleyball team fell short of the win column again Saturday as host Western Oregon claimed a 30-25, 17-30, 30-28, 30-22 victory at the New P.E. Building.
UAA (3-10, 0-5 GNAC) put together one of its better efforts during its current six-match losing streak, but had no answer for hard-hitting Shakira Jenkins, who led the Wolves (5-11, 3-3) with 18 kills. WOU setter Amy Herron was impressive as well with 38 assists and 15 digs.
After dropping the first game, UAA rallied with a dominant effort in the second frame, hitting .345 (14 kills-4 errors-29 attempts) to even the match at a game apiece.
The crucial third game was tight throughout, with UAA holding an advantage at 19-17 before a WOU rally. UAA fell behind 29-25 and fought off three game points before Katrina Johnson (12 kills) ended it with a kill.
Game 4 was all about the home team as WOU jumped to a 23-9 lead and coasted to its second straight victory.
Senior Chelsey Jones had 11 kills and three blocks for the Seawolves, while sophomore Heather Lyons posted her team-best fifth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs. Senior libero Rachael Knecht had a team-high 16 digs.
UAA faces two more stern road challenges next week with matches at Western Washington (Thur., Sept. 28) and Seattle University (Sat., Sept. 30).
