FAIRBANKS – Sophomore Paul Crowder tallied a goal and an assist and sophomore goaltender Jon Olthuis recorded 31 saves as Alaska Anchorage forged a 2-2 tie against intrastate rival Alaska Fairbanks in the final game of the annual Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup series here tonight at the Carlson Center.
UAA (6-7-5, 2-7-3 WCHA) fought back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to earn the tie and extended its unbeaten streak against UAF (3-10-3, 3-7-2 CCHA) to eight games (6-0-2) and its unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents to 12 games (8-0-4).
Crowder put the Seawolves on the scoreboard at the 5:29 mark of the second period with an even-strength goal, knotting the game at 1-1 just 2:01 after the Nanooks would take a 1-0 lead on a power-play strike from Adam Naglich.
Brandon Gawryletz's short-handed tally 55 seconds into the third gave UAF a 2-1 advantage, but the Seawolves would answer back for the second time as junior defenseman Mat Robinson would register the game-tying goal at 7:45 with a power-play marker.
UAA, which was edged in the overall shot battle 33-32, fired three shots on net in the overtime session while UAF attempted two.
Each team went 1-for-7 on the power play. The Seawolves committed eight penalties and the Nanooks were whistled for nine.
Senior Merit Waldrop collected his fifth assist and freshman Sean Wiles earned his first collegiate point and assist on the Seawolves' first goal, while Crowder and sophomore Kevin Clark were credited with the helpers on the second score.
UAA, which claimed the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup for the second straight season by posting a 3-0-1 mark against UAF, returns to action Jan. 11-12 with a two-game series at Colorado College.
