ANCHORAGE - A three-goal first-period deficit proved to be too much for Alaska Anchorage to overcome as visiting Minnesota State skated to a 5-2 victory over the Seawolves in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action tonight at Sullivan Arena.
The setback extended UAA's (11-16-3, 7-16-1 WCHA) current losing skid to a season-long six games, while the Mavericks (11-16-6, 8-12-5 WCHA) earned their fifth consecutive win in Anchorage.
MSU scored three goals in a 10-minute span to take a commanding 3-0 lead at the end of one period of action. Sophomore Jon Kalinski, who led the Mavs in points with three, scored the opening two goals of the period while Lucas Fansen added the third.
Senior Justin Bourne put the Seawolves on the scoreboard with his 10th goal of the season 59 seconds in the second period, but UAA would fail to find the back of the net for the remainder of the period. MSU would regain its three-goal cushion on a power-play strike from Mick Berge at 14:26 of the third. Junior Merit Waldrop tallied UAA's other goal at the 17:07 mark before Travis Morin would end the scoring with an empty netter in the final two minutes.
Freshman goalie Jon Olthuis was solid in a relief appearance in net for the Seawolves, stopping 27 of 28 shots after replacing junior Nathan Lawson at the start of the second period. Lawson made 10 saves and allowed three goals in 20 minutes of action.
Senior Mark Smith collected his sixth assist of the year on Bourne's marker and junior Peter Cartwight earned his fifth helper on Waldrop's goal.
Maverick netminder Mike Zacharias turned back 30 shots, including all 14 he faced during the first period, while picking up his ninth win of the season.
UAA went scoreless on the power play at 0-for-6, while MSU would score twice in seven attempts with the man advantage. The Mavericks also owned a 42-32 advantage in shots.
The Seawolves skate on their home ice for the final time this season in the series finale Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
