UAA skates to 4-4 tie with Wisconsin

ANCHORAGE ? Alaska Anchorage snapped its six-game home losing skid by skating to a 4-4 tie against No. 17 Wisconsin tonight in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action at the Sullivan Arena.

 

The Seawolves (6-10-6, 2-10-4 WCHA) led 2-0 midway through the first-period and held a 4-2 advantage entering the final period, but the Badgers (10-10-4, 6-9-2 WCHA) would forge back with two goals in the final 13 minutes of regulation to earn the tie and clinch three of four points in the weekend series.

 

Four UAA skaters registered multi-point games, led by freshman Brad McCabe who tallied a career-best 2-1--3 totals. Senior Peter Cartwright recorded one goal and one assist and sophomore's Paul Crowder and Kevin Clark each posted two assists.

 

Special teams played a big role in the final outcome as both teams connected on 3 of 6 power-play chances, including combining for four power-play tallies during the first 20 minutes of play.

 

The three power-play goals tied for the most scored by UAA in a game this season and snapped a three-game scoreless

 

UAA jumped out to a two-goal lead on back-to-back first-period power-play tallies from McCabe at 3:15 and Cartwright at 13:32, but UW would counter with two power-play scores of its own from Michael Davies at 14:27 and Blake Geoffrion at 18:07, knotting the game at 2-2 at the first break.

 

McCabe would strike for his second goal of the night just 52 seconds into the second as the Seawolves would retake the lead 3-2. UAA would push its lead back to two at the 8:26 mark when junior defenseman Shane Lovdahl would blast a one-timer from the top right circle into net as the Seawolves skated with a two-man advantage.

 

UAA's two-goal second came on just four shot attempts on Wisconsin goaltender Shane Connelly (15 saves).

 

The ?Wolves could not maintain their lead in the final frame, as Ben Street would bang in an even-strength marker at 7:10 and Davies would connect for the equalizer at 16:40. UW owned an 11-7 advantage in shots during the period.

 

The Seawolves managed one shot during the overtime period while holding the Badgers without an attempt on net.

 

UW finished the night with a 25-19 overall advantage in shots.

 

Sophomore goaltender Jon Olthuis recorded 21 saves for UAA, improving his season record to 5-10-6.

 

The Seawolves travel to Grand Forks, N.D., next weekend for a two-game series at North Dakota.
