Seawolf runners sweep in San Diego

SAN DIEGO ? The Alaska Anchorage cross country team continued its strong showing in 2008 with a pair of team wins at the UC San Diego Triton Classic Saturday on the UCSD campus. The nationally ranked No. 7 UAA men dominated a field of nine teams that included No. 20 UC San Diego, while the No. 22 Seawolf women won their third straight meet over a 13-team field that included the No. 19 Triton women.

“Both teams ran very confidently today,” head coach
Michael Friess said via phone after the race.

The Seawolf men placed four runners in the top five and five in the top eight to easily beat the second-place Tritons. Sophomore
Marko Cheseto (31:29.7), senior David Kiplagat (31:57.7) and freshmen Alfred Kangogo (32:09.2) and Jake Parisien (32:12.8) finished 2-3-4-5 in a tight pack behind winner Jordan Chipangma of Central Arizona, who crossed the line in 31:07.2 over the 10-kilometer course.

UAA sophomore
Paul Rottich finished eighth in 32:39.6, while senior Mick Boyle was 17th in 33.39.4.

“The men focused on running as a pack and didn't really care about the top guy from Central Arizona,” Friess said. “That played out pretty well for us in the results.”

The Seawolf women were again led by senior
Elizabeth Chepkosgei and junior Laura Carr and got strong showings from freshman Ruth Jeptoo and sophomore Hallidie Wilt to topple the higher-ranked Tritons on their home course. Chepkosgei placed third in 21:48 with Carr hot on her heels, 1.6 seconds behind.

“The Laura and Elizabeth one-two punch was strong again,” Friess said. “They needed to get in front of UC San Diego and they did that today.”

Jeptoo had her strongest race as a Seawolf with an 11th place effort in 22.56.6, while Wilt clocked a 23:07.9 to finish 15th. Freshman
Laura Rombach (23:19.1) and sophomore Emma Bohman (23:19.2) finished 17th and 18th, respectively.

“I was really happy for Ruth, who had a great race and a big improvement for her,” Friess said. “Hallidie also showed some improvement and Laura and Emma continue to look strong.”

Next up for UAA will be its biggest race yet at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships in Yakima, Wash., Oct. 25.

“We told them, 'Now the next time we race that's for championships',” Friess said. “We finished our regular season out pretty solidly and it positions us well for the next two weeks. We've got to be healthy, train hard and run with passion in a couple weeks.”
